Could Six Sigma Decrease Debts? Presidential Candidates Are In Agreement

August 14, 2011

The year of 2012 will be a presidential election year and of course there will be unending discussions on many topics, but the biggest interest will be in the deficit in the budget and how to end all the spending. This is a huge topic for every American, along with the candidates tackling this issue. Every candidate, whether they are Democrat or Republican, are agreeing that an answer has to be found in order for the children and their children to live here. But Michael George seems to be the only one who has an answer to this tough issue.

The founder of Strong America Now, Michael George leads this nonprofit conservative political group in trying to eliminate the national debt without creating new taxes. This is to be accomplished by the use a business strategy for reducing waste and increasing profits and quality for businesses called lean six sigma.  They feel it works for companies, why wouldn’t it be useful for government? George says it can be effectively used for this purpose, on the Strong America Now website one can see over 25 case studies showing the effectiveness of this process within government sectors. One example of this is an increase of production for the Mine Resistant Ambush Vehicles which protect soldiers in Iraq; the Department of Defense Naval Warfare Systems Center in Charleston, SC used the lean six sigma process to accomplish this goal.

The presidential candidates are being pursued by George to put their signature to a Lean 6 Sigma Pledge “to eliminate spending deficits and start paying down the national debt by 2017 by deploying lean six sigma waste reduction methods to detect and eliminate twenty five percent of spending per year across the federal government, to attend two days of training in the lean six sigma method, and to complete a waste reduction project prior to my inauguration.” The Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, was the very first to sign, Herman Cain has signed it, and George is hoping that Mitt Romney will sign it.

Lean six sigma is also of interest to President Obama through his Jobs and Competitiveness Council, they will be “applying business concepts (like the lean six sigma approach) to regulatory processes” later during this year. In a presidential campaign speech, Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, has made a promise to implement up to a twenty percent saving in most government programs with lean six sigma.

With all the political buzz going on about six sigma, it is very encouraging to those who have been in the corporate arena and have seen the accomplishments of lean six sigma. The President and CEO of Aveta Business Institute, a leading provider for six sigma training online, Craig Setter states, “We are thrilled to see that Six Sigma is finally being considered as an option for reducing the national debt, and we are completely behind this tactic.”
